you have kids they're especially likely to find it useful. Basically a one volume encyclopedia, with chapters on:
Understanding the Universe
The Story of the Earth
The Story of Life
Exploring the World
Invention and Discovery
Conflicts of the Modern Age
The Structure of Society
Religion and Thought
Artistic Endeavors
each section is complete enough to satisfy without being so detailed as to overwhelm. This is one of those books that the family stole from my pile before I had a chance to read and they thoroughly enjoyed going through it and getting a quick education.

Two interesting things to note: (1) the claims for Darwinism are appropriately modesty
