Freak ()

The main drawback to the detective business, aside from a little violence now and then, is that you make your living from people's trouble, and people in trouble tend to forget their manners. Then, maybe it's better to make your living from other people's trouble than from other people. -Michael Collins, Freak

Dan Fortune is an old-school private eye. With just one arm, no partner or friends in law enforcement, and no steady girlfriend, he's a real throwback to the happy days of vulnerable lonely peepers before Spenser came along. When bodies start piling up at random we could almost be in a Raymond Chandler mystery. One interesting note though, Fortune works out of New York City. There must be others, but offhand the only other detective I can think of who does is Matt Scudder. At any rate, Freak is first rate.
